Who needs this
Every UK director and PSC has to verify. The free route does not work for everyone.
Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, Companies House now checks the identity behind every UK company. You verify once, receive a personal code, and use that code for every filing after that.
Your passport has no chip
The GOV.UK app reads a biometric chip. Many countries do not issue one, and older passports stay valid for years. The government's own impact assessment counts 117,639 people already on the register, from 112 countries, in exactly this position.

- When do I actually need to verify my identity?
- Before your company files its next confirmation statement. Companies House will not accept the statement until every director named on it has verified. PSCs have a separate deadline — see the PSC question below. The 12-month transition period began on 18 November 2025 and runs to 17 November 2026, but Companies House does not publish that as a deadline for anyone: it tells directors and PSCs to verify by their own due dates. For most companies the confirmation statement falls earlier, so that is the date that matters.
- I am a PSC but not a director. When is my deadline?
- If you are already on the register as a person with significant control, you must provide your personal code within the first 14 days of your birth month. If you are newly added, you provide it when you are registered, or within 14 days. A PSC who is also a director follows the confirmation statement rule instead.
- Can I verify my identity free of charge?
- Yes. Verifying direct with Companies House through GOV.UK One Login is free. You can do it in the app, at a Post Office, or using your bank details with your National Insurance number. We are a paid alternative for people that route does not work for.Check whether the free route works for you
- Who cannot use the free GOV.UK route?
- Mainly people whose passport has no biometric chip. The government's own equality impact assessment identifies 117,639 people already on the register, nationals of 112 countries, who cannot use GOV.UK One Login for that reason. The app also needs an iPhone 8 or newer, or Android 10 or higher.
- What is a Companies House personal code?
- An 11 character code issued once you have verified your identity. It belongs to you rather than to any company, so one code covers all of your directorships. You give it when filing a confirmation statement, when you are appointed as a director, and when you become a person with significant control.
- What happens if my directors are not verified in time?
- Your confirmation statement cannot be filed. Missing it is an offence committed by the company and by every officer in default. In practice Companies House imposes a financial penalty rather than prosecuting, on a published tariff that runs from £500 to £1,500 for an offence of this seriousness, and a company that keeps failing to file can be struck off the register. Acting as a director without verifying is a separate offence in its own right.Already missed your deadline?
- How much does it cost and how long does it take?
- Standard is £50 and is verified within 3 working days. Express is £99 and is verified the same day. Both are one-off payments that include filing with Companies House as your ACSP.
- What happens if you cannot verify me?
- You do not pay for a verification you do not get. If we cannot verify your identity, we refund your payment in full. A photo that needs retaking is not a failure: your link lets you try again at no extra cost first.
- What do I need to have ready?
